Today, we will talk about the first step of becoming a versatile talent.
It seems that American universities do not like students who are only good at one thing, and they seem to select students who are good at multiple fields. What should we focus on to become a versatile student that such universities select? We have prepared today’s posting to answer this question.
Before we give you the answer, let’s look at one term.
That word is “authority”. The word “authority” can be translated into English as Authority/ Power/ Expert / Dignity. These four words all look similar, but there is a slight difference. The word often used interchangeably with “authority” is “power”.
“Authority” is usually used as a very good word, meaning the power to command or control others, and the prestige that can influence socially recognized in a certain field.
“Power” is defined as the officially recognized right and power to obey or dominate others, especially the coercive power that the state or government has over its citizens, and is interpreted with negative words such as obedience or dominance.
The word close to “power” is “authority/ power”, while “power” can be seen as “expert/dignity”. “Power” is an image of obeying the other party’s weaknesses, but “authority” is usually interpreted as a good meaning that influences society. A famous psychologist in the United States said, “It’s a good thing to become an authority.” “Being an authority is a good thing” can be understood as follows. For example, in some work, people can be divided into two categories.
That is, people who do the work, and people who can’t. If people are divided in that work, a hierarchy is created between them, and “authority” is given to those who do the work. Such things happen not only in companies and educational institutions but also in peer groups. It is actually very important to establish authority within a peer group. The authority among classmates is not a hierarchical relationship, but a case where authority is given by friends in some parts while being friends. If a student has such an experience, it is very likely that the experience will be connected to confidence.
There is a recognition desire felt from the praise of parents during infancy, but in the teens, there is a recognition desire coming from the peer group.
Howard Gardner says that from around the age of 10, the recognitions coming from the peer group have the most influence. It’s a story everyone knows, but I wanted to emphasize it again by borrowing the words of a prominent person. It’s about teenagers who are greatly affected by recognition among friends. Then how should we get recognition from the peer group?
In the case of male students, for example, bad students often touch their peers, but the fact is that they can’t touch friends who are really good at sports, games, or studying. This is because “authority” was formed in each field where they are good in the peer group. Parents would like their child to be good at instruments, sports, and studying, but in fact, even if it’s useless, it’s good if you do well enough to be recognized in the peer group. Having one skill that can be recognized in the peer group gives you confidence. No matter what field, students who have experienced gaining confidence will transfer that confidence to other fields and do well.
It’s difficult research to measure, but Singapore has announced research results that the more you study, the higher your confidence. In other words, to become a versatile student, it is important to focus on one thing because you can’t do everything well. Then you will be recognized in the peer group, and through that process, you will be filled with confidence. Once you gain confidence in that way, the student will work hard in other fields outside the recognized field, and the day will come when he will be recognized.
Students who have worked hard to be recognized in various fields will eventually become versatile students. Not only that, but you will naturally have leadership. Emphasizing that being recognized in a specific area you like is the first step to becoming a versatile talent, we will finish today’s posting.
