Essay Contests/ Quiz Contests/ Investment Contests, and Recommended Books

Today, we will discuss what EC (Extracurricular Activities) are suitable for Economics (Economics and Finance majors).

Today, we will explore what EC is suitable for Economics/ Finance.

The two hearts that move the American economy are Silicon Valley in the West Wall Street in the east I will introduce EC tailored to Economics and Finance, which are often practiced in these two places.

EC related to Finance and Economics can be divided into three major categories:

• Essay Contest

• Knowledge Competition

• Summer Program

The advantages of an Essay Contest are:

• Proof of good essay-writing skills

• Proof of strong understanding of economic theories related to Economics Let me introduce some Essay Contests.

HIEEC (Harvard International Economics Essay Contest)

One of the very good competitions is the HIEEC (Harvard International Economics Essay Contest), where students in grades 9-12 can participate by submitting an essay of less than 1500 words. The prompt for this contest comes out about two months before the deadline, so it is advantageous for students who are prepared in advance. I will briefly tell you about the 2022 Prompt.

Discuss how the problem of China’s declining birth rate can be solved when viewed against economic phenomena. Beyond the prompt, if we briefly divide the solutions, we can discuss methods such as accepting immigrants and decentralizing centralization.

The second topic is to Discuss how to solve the problem of rising house prices in the United States, where inflation is causing prices and house prices to rise. Discuss how to compensate for the losses that often occur economically due to environmental changes/climate changes. Do you think all countries in the world should go in the same direction with national policies? As you can see from the four prompts of 2022, it is a contest where students who are well-prepared in advance can get good grades.

John Locke Essay Competition

The John Locke Essay Competition is a competition that spans several fields, and in the case of the Economics field, you have to submit an essay of less than 1500 characters. The topic of this competition is quite difficult. Let’s take a quick look.

What are the pros and cons when a country operates its economy only with money printed from the central bank without receiving taxes from the people? Despite the fact that problems caused by tariffs in international trade are considered economically inefficient, why should we trade activities even at the expense of tariffs? What would happen if billionaires were banned?

This competition may seem easier than HIEEC, but because it deals with quite in-depth topics, it is the same that you need to prepare diligently in advance.

Berkeley Economic Review

The Berkeley Economics Review High School Essay Contest is a great opportunity for high school students’ essays to be published in a journal, but the preparation period is not generous. In some years, the topic was announced on 3/24 and the submission was until 4/12, so it is very difficult to apply if you do not study in advance because you have to write a 1500-character essay within a fortnight.

High School FED Challenge

The High School FED Challenge is an essay contest hosted by the New York Federal Bank, and the disadvantage is that only high school students living near New York can apply. However, since other regional federal banks also host essay contests, it would be good to first find out about the relevant region. If you win this contest, you will be provided with a tour of the New York FED and a deep educational opportunity on Economics and Finance, so it will be a very good experience.

In addition to essay contests, I will also introduce quiz-based contests and investment contests where you answer questions.

National Economics Challenge

The National Economics Challenge hosted by CEE This is a competition that goes international if you pass the main round through regional preliminaries. Since there are regional preliminaries, I would like to tell you to click on the region first and find out more.

The teacher forms a team with 3-4 members and applies, and it is a competition where you have to solve 45 problems in 35 minutes.

If you look at one problem simply, it is a multiple-choice problem, and You are looking for the answer to the question of what happens to the country if you raise a lot of tariffs.

Northwestern Economics Tournament

I will introduce the Northwestern Economics Tournament. This tournament is suitable for students who have completed AP Macro and Micro. As you can see from the example, it will be a somewhat difficult tournament to explain complex and difficult problems for a long time. If you get good grades in this tournament, it can have a good impact on admission.

The National Personal Finance Challenge

I will tell you about The National Personal Finance Challenge hosted by CEE. This competition is a financial knowledge competition, and it is a competition format that holds the finals in June after going through regional preliminaries and main rounds. It is also a competition with a prize.

Wharton Global High School Investment Competition

The next competition I will introduce is the Wharton Investment Competition. This competition is for high school students, but a very serious Prompt is given. For example, in a competition a few years ago, it was assumed that it was an investment team of a company owned by a businessman who graduated from Wharton School, and when $100,000 was given, it was a topic to submit a strategy book prepared for 10 weeks on how to invest. This competition is very difficult, and it requires experience in real investment and the ability to analyze the current economic situation and sectors. Any high school student can apply and form a team with 4-7 members to compete. It is a competition that requires one adult advisor to accompany.

In addition to essay contests, knowledge-related quizzes, and investment contests, Summer Program can also be a good EC.

I will explain the summer program in detail in another post, so it would be good to just refer to it. Most summer programs are similar in nature and have a lot of parts to learn about finance, so it would be good to decide which program is good while looking at the qualifications and targets.

Recommended Books

The most basic part of filling in EC related to Economics/ Finance is classical learning. I will recommend a few books that will be helpful if you read them. Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations I would like to tell you to read it at least once because it is a good book to understand why the current economic system was built. The ‘Intelligent Investor’ and ‘Security Analysis’ by Benjamin Graham, the mentor of the investment genius, Warren Buffett. ‘Intelligent Investor’ is not burdensome for high school students to read, but in fact, ‘Security Analysis’ is a book that is difficult to read even for majors, so it may be a bit difficult for high school students.

I also recommend the book by Andre Kostolany, who is in the position of Warren Buffett in Europe. Warren Buffett did not publish his own book, but I recommend you to read ‘The essays of Warren Buffett’, which is a book made up of the stories he told at the shareholders’ meeting. I also recommend the books of Peter Lynch, Howard S. Marks, Philip Arthur Fisher, Nassim Nicholas Taleb. For really mathematically excellent friends applying for Economics, you can also do EC related to Statistics or Python, but Today, I introduced

• Essay Contest

• Knowledge Competition

• Summer Program I recommend that you prepare well by referring to them.

If you have any questions about the EC related to Economics that I introduced or about preparing for the competition, Please feel free to contact us, A-One Institute and we will kindly help you.
