Two Strategies

Today, I would like to discuss what mindset we should have and how we should prepare as AI-related technologies are rapidly emerging.

The image above shows the eye contact of YouTubers. Often, YouTubers lose focus on the camera while reading their scripts, but now we live in an era where AI can correct this.

Recently, a new version called Chat GPT-4 Turbo was released. Previously, developers had to fine-tune the model to suit specific purposes, but one of the new features in this update allows even non-developers to create Personalized Chatbots. Out of curiosity, I tried a few things myself. It was creating a chatbot that automatically responds to email inquiries. Instead of inputting code, you can simply write your requirements, and AI will provide an answer. Although AI does respond, in my personal opinion, it is not yet perfect. However, you can sell these personalized chatbots in app stores, showing how people are building their ecosystems around GPT. I highly recommend that parents try using it as well.

To explain in more detail the attitude we should adopt in this era of AI, I would like to introduce an article.

The article discusses the impact of AI development on white-collar workers. As a result of AI’s emergence, we have seen a decline in employment rates among freelancers, along with a drop in their income. Since the release of Chat GPT, we can observe the extent to which human jobs are being threatened.

Another interesting article is a review from Harvard Business School. It presents research on how AI has affected the productivity and quality of intellectual workers’ jobs.

According to the study, the bottom half of skilled participants, meaning those who are not top-tier professionals, saw a 43% increase in work efficiency when using Chat GPT. In contrast, top-skilled participants only saw a 17% increase. This suggests that the more expertise one has, the less significant the improvement in work efficiency when aided by Chat GPT. Therefore, to survive in the age of AI, one must become an expert.

To discuss the skills needed to survive in the age of AI, I would like to use an analogy of digging the ground to describe work and study. When people work or study, they can generally be categorized into:

- Those who dig a wide area shallowly

- Those who dig a narrow area deeply

While it’s ideal to dig deep into various fields, this is not realistically possible. Therefore, in the age of AI, talent requires a certain level of broad knowledge as well as expertise in a specific field.

To become valuable in the AI era:

- Accumulate broad knowledge while digging deep enough in a specific area to become an expert!

- If you want to enter management, you need a broad understanding of various areas (1), and you must have your own area of expertise (2).

Here are two ways to become such a talent:

1. Take an interest in things unrelated to you!

2. Persistently do tasks you dislike every day!

This is the way to survive in the age of AI.

To give an example from my experience of what this means: to take an interest in things unrelated to me, I pay attention when experts come to repair things in my house. Although it has nothing to do with me, I observe closely. In New Jersey, businesses must submit floor plans to get business approval, but often, the builder or designer does not have them. If you request a new floor plan, it could cost over $2,000. So, with some basic knowledge of CAD and Photoshop, I managed to create the floor plan in two days. The image above is the actual plan I drew. I also completed a lease agreement by studying the relevant laws.

The key is to take an interest in things that don't directly involve you and try to gain experience in various ways.

An example of persistently doing tasks I dislike is related to AMC. Although I didn’t have to, I took the exam myself to solve the problems. Doing so helps me understand the trends and generate ideas. These are the traces of my efforts.

When solving Quadratic Function problems, the symmetry property makes it relatively easy to find the answer. However, surprisingly, many students get these simple problems wrong. By analyzing problems related to Quadratic Equations & Functions, you can break them down into finer categories. From years of problem analysis, I can see that 7 out of 10 sub-categories have already been tested, and the problem I showed above falls into the 8th category. Since this year’s test included the 8th category, I predict that a similar problem will appear in the DSAT. Also, since the 9th and 10th sub-categories have not yet been tested, I anticipate that they will be covered in next year’s or the following year’s tests.

Therefore, in the age of AI:

1. It is essential to be curious and try different things in various fields.

2. You must do tedious tasks to gain specialized knowledge!

I hope that through today’s post, you will make efforts to become the talent needed to survive in the AI era.
