I will explain the difficulty and criteria for each.
The content I will post today is about the Science Olympiad and Research. Many of you think that Olympiads and Research are only for gifted students and don’t even try, but I will explain not only the criteria for judgment but also the process of preparation.
How and where to start the Olympiad or Research in the field of science, I will explain with one picture below how to set the standard for starting.
AP, Olympiad 1 & 2, Research
A table that can be seen at a glance
AP Scope and Difficulty In the case of the Science Olympiad, many participate in the Bio, Chem, Physics Olympiad. The table that will be the standard today is Area - Range Depth - Depth / Difficulty It is drawn so that it can be explained according to. Let’s see how wide and deep the Olympiad problem is, that is, how it is set in terms of range and difficulty. The standard is the AP mentioned by the College Board. If you look at the AP as a standard, you can set the range and depth Depth corresponding to the Area as shown in the table above. Looking at the Olympiad based on the AP of the College Board, the Olympiad is
Reginal Competition Olympiad 1
International Competition Olympiad 2
You should know that it is divided like this.
Scope and Difficulty of Olympiad 1 and 2 Olympiad 1 covers similar to the AP area, but there are a few parts that the AP does not cover. However, you can think that there is no big difference in range with AP, and the depth (difficulty) is slightly different, but you can think of it as almost the same level. The area of Olympiad 2 is wider than AP and the depth is also deeper. You can think that it is much more difficult than AP. There is a level difference between AP, Olympiad 1 and 2, but it cannot be said to be enormous. If you cover AP well and get relatively good grades in Olympiad 1, there will be no big problem in preparing for Olympiad 2.
Research Scope and Difficulty
In the case of research, you can choose a topic from within while studying AP or preparing for the Olympiad. Research needs to dig deep in depth rather than developing widely, so as you can see in the table above, you need to go narrow in area and deep in depth.
If you are preparing for a specific subject’s Olympiad, it is difficult to start because there are no well-made textbooks on the market and it is difficult to study by unit. So, I recommend studying with AP textbooks or getting help from an academy. The most important thing is to set a basic book. You need to prepare a basic book that you can study while looking up every day.
• Olympiad Challenge Judgment Standard However, I will tell you that many students are curious about the standard of whether a student has the ability to prepare for the Olympiad. It is good to set the AP as a standard. In the case of Physics, if you study Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C alone and understand less than 80 percent, and even have difficulty approaching FRQ problems, it is better not to prepare for the Olympiad. On the contrary, if you understand more than 80 percent of AP and can approach FRQ problems, it is okay to challenge Olympiad preparation. It is good to judge whether it is right to challenge the Olympiad while studying AP with completeness. It is good to solve difficult problems that cover AP and Olympiad at the same time or to study separately, but in reality, it is actually difficult. It is good to practice with actual past questions with the help of an academy. When you think your level has improved, take the test and get good grades. And for the research topic, it is good to look for what to do with the research topic while conducting AP or Olympiad studies.
In conclusion, it is possible to prepare efficiently by conducting AP studies, Olympiad, and Research at the same time. If the student is planning to take any AP subject anyway, it is good to study that subject in advance. Even if you do not do the Olympiad or research, if you have studied AP Chem in advance, there is an advantage that the internal score can be good. Therefore, our thought is that it is good to do some advance study for AP study. In terms of timing, if you look at Olympiad 1 and then start studying Olympiad 2, it will be late. It is helpful to study in advance with a difficult level that includes all the ranges of Olympiad 1 and 2.
However, be careful that it is inefficient to study the Olympiad when AP is not well understood. For Research Research, it is good to keep in mind that good results come from reading many papers published on relevant topics in a good journal. We have a lot of inquiries about the Olympiad and Research at our academy, and what I want to say is this. It is not that you must win in the Olympiad, you must do research, and then you get good results from the university. However, if you are prepared to some extent, it is advantageous to get good results. The key point I want to tell you today is this. When you study the College Level AP, If you understand less than 80%, do not challenge the Olympiad If you understand more than 80%, try challenging the Olympiad or Research. My advice is to start studying the AP subject you are interested in, decide whether to challenge the Olympiad, and prepare as soon as possible.
